The Students We Stop Counting

Youth Today · August 2026

Five talking points

The school-to-prison pipeline is a policy design problem, not a student behavior problem — and it can be redesigned.

Most trauma-informed training stops at awareness. The gap between knowing and doing is where students keep getting lost.

Education continuity for incarcerated youth is the single highest-leverage intervention in the juvenile justice system, and it's chronically underfunded.

It's a relationship problem, not a curriculum problem. The students who get labeled 'unteachable' are usually the ones who've been taught that school isn't for them. That's a curriculum problem, not a capacity problem.
